What Is Activated Charcoal?

What does activated charcoal do?

I get asked this question more than any other!  Activated charcoal is a fine black, tasteless powder.  It is made by a special heating process of charcoal that causes the charcoal to develop millions of tiny pores.  The porous surface of activated charcoal actually has a negative electric charge that causes positive charged toxins and gas to bond with it.  Basically, it acts like a magnet to pull out impurities.

Here’s a few ways activated charcoal is used that might surprise you!

  • In water filters to purify the water for drinking
  • In emergency rooms to absorb toxins from overdose patients
  • To treat poisonous spider bites

Activated charcoal is amazing to include in your skincare and beauty routine, too!  If you take a look around our website, you might notice that we use it in many of our products!

Our best-selling product is our Activated Charcoal face soap!  The activated charcoal in this soap acts like a magnet to draw impurities from skin, which helps with excess oil, combination skin, and even balancing breakouts!  Tea tree and lavender essential oils soothe and deep clean skin.  We have received so much feedback on our Activated Charcoal soap from customers saying that it has given them the best complexion they’ve had in years!

Pink Clay + Charcoal soap does the same job as the Activated Charcoal soap, but it’s a little gentler and made for all skin types.  The pink clay is gentle and peppermint and grapefruit essential oils smell amazing and contribute to a glowing complexion.

Black to Bright Tooth Whitening Powder:  Remember how activated charcoal pulls impurities from your skin?  It does the same thing for your teeth!  I have to be honest, the first time I tried this on my teeth I freaked out a little, because my mouth was BLACK!  But the scare was worth it because I noticed an immediate difference in the shade of my teeth, without any irritation or sensitivity.  The best way to use Black to Bright is to get your toothbrush wet, dip it into the charcoal powder, brush on your teeth for five minutes, rinse, and brush with your normal toothpaste.  I created this product because my love of coffee was starting to show on my teeth, and my mouth is too sensitive for white strips.  It’s so fun to use (and scare your kids!) and it really works!

Have you tried products with activated charcoal?  If so, what did you think?
